For a near-by red wine tasting trip from Silicon Valley, the Mid-Peninsula, Contra Costa and Alameda counties, try Livermore Valley AVA. The advantage of Livermore is it’s flat to hilly road terrain. You won’t be faced with mountain driving like you are when visiting the nearby Santa Cruz AVA.
Why These 6 Picks?
Our Livermore winery picks are mapped in order of how well we appreciate their red wine. ( They all also make white wine.) We’ve visited nearly all the wineries in the area, and these are the ones California Wine Fan returns to. So if you only have time for a few, visit them in the suggested order till you run out of time. The distances are all a mile or so apart, so a little backtracking is not going to burn alot of gas. Some of the wineries also have a charming setting or tasting room and interesting back stories, so that helps make them a destination worth visiting.

How to Get There
From the San Francisco South Bay we recommend getting on 680 and exiting on 84 east. From the San Francisco South Peninsula we suggest going a bit south to catch 237 to get to 680. From the San Francisco Mid-peninsula we recommend taking the Dumbarton Bridge east, with a dull drive through suburban Fremont, but a picturesque drive though the quaint old town of Niles and then onto scenic Niles Canyon Road (route 84). Make up your own return route!
